Madagascar Promotes Free Knowledge on Water Resources Through Africa Wiki Challenge 2026
Antananarivo, Madagascar – Madagascar has participated in the Africa Wiki Challenge 2026, joining other African countries in an initiative dedicated to improving free knowledge about rivers, water resources, and environmental heritage across Wikimedia platforms. The national campaign, held from June 1 to July 4, 2026, brought together students, volunteers, and experienced Wikimedians to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. The initiative also reflects the broader objectives of the African Union's Agenda 2063, which emphasizes sustainable natural resource management and improved access to water across the continent.
The campaign was organized by the Wiki Malagasy Language and Environment community in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Avaradrano (MASCA) in Sabotsy Namehana. The partnership aimed to introduce university students to the Wikimedia movement while equipping them with practical skills to contribute to free and open knowledge.
A total of 32 participants joined the campaign, including 17 first- and third-year Communication students who became Wikimedia contributors for the first time. Throughout the training sessions, participants learned the principles of free knowledge, article writing and editing on Wikipedia, uploading freely licensed photographs and media files to Wikimedia Commons, and enriching structured data on Wikidata.
Beyond technical training, the campaign encouraged participants to understand the importance of sharing reliable, freely accessible information. By documenting Madagascar's water resources on Wikimedia platforms, contributors are helping preserve valuable knowledge while making it accessible to researchers, students, decision-makers, and the general public worldwide.
According to Raveloaritiana Mamisoa, the national organizer of Africa Wiki Challenge 2026 in Madagascar and a trainer on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, the campaign exceeded expectations by attracting enthusiastic new contributors.
